This project will build upon the concepts we have studied until now, including the conceptualization of digital tools and how that affects the creation of digital content. In Photoshop we looked at the basic tools, how they were used, and explored how those tools and use case scenarios conceptually affected the results.
In this project you will take elements from Photoshop and compose with them in time. You will lean how to move content from Photoshop into Apple’s Motion. You will then take that content and animated over time including adding effects and text. We will examine what happens when we explore principles such as rhythm and repetition,, proportion, and time. We will also examine the cultural situation motion graphics: what they are used for, how they fit into fine art, and how these tools influence their output and reception.
This projects is split into several parts.
Week 1:
Topics- Moving media into Motion, Basic digital video concepts and terminology.
Project: You will chop up and manipulate found images in Photoshop, move them into Motion and animate them over time. Focus on narrative aspects, how elements are revealed, and how elements move around the picture plane.
Use: Multiple elements in a minimum 900 frame (30 sec.) project. Apply filters and use complex movement to create interest. Look at early experimental and abstract films for inspiration. Experiment with behaviors and replicators if needed.
Reading: Television Graphics and the Virtual Bodyby Margaret Morse from Virtualities: Television, Media Art, and Cyberculture available from GW library (Aladdin E Book) or
Seth Price creates a work which uses its own medium to critique itself. This "music video" is a work about the culture and function of pop music.
Hans Richter created Rhythmus 23 in 1923. Modern motion graphics are strongly related to early avant garde film making, which explores the possibilities and structures of the medium.
Duchamp created Anemic Cenema with Man Ray and Alagret in 1926. These Dada or Surrealist works explored (among other things) the junctions of traditional fine arts with new media and kinetics.
Here Duchamp works with composer John Cage, who also explores the structures and possibilities of his media.
